The Difficult Decision Of When To Start Senior Care

For many individuals caring for aging parents or family members the decisions as to when to start some type of senior care service is often challenging. Often the first thought of the family, and quite often the senior, is that a nursing home or assistant living complex is the only option available. This is a big step for the senior and many see it as a loss of their ability to take care of themselves and to lead their own life. Families and seniors do have another choice that can allow the senior to live at home while having the level of support needed. This is all done by a home care provider.
Home caregivers are not medical staff and they do not perform medical services for the clients. What they do is support the senior in living an independent lifestyle in their current residence. Typical tasks that the senior care program will offer include transportation to complete errands, dressing and grooming, showering or bathing assistance, preparing and planning meals, light housekeeping, laundry and even helping with pet care and exercise. More specific assistance can also be provided in support when walking, transferring to and from wheelchairs or scooters and even help with toileting or incontinence care.
The senior care support provider will be there to assist the client in whatever tasks needed while still allowing the senior to do as much as possible on their own. This is a great option for the family since the caregiver only is there as needed or when the family is not available. Services that encourage the same caregiver to work with the senior is a true benefit as they become a companion to the client and a trusted support service for the family. Developing a strong relationship with the senior and the family can also provide important feedback about possible needs that may develop over time as well as with help in coordinating additional services as needed.
